Overview
Swan Christian Education Association (SCEA) supports more than 5,400 students across seven schools and eight campuses throughout metropolitan Perth. As part of its ongoing commitment to quality teaching and learning, SCEA set out to rethink how technology was being used in the classroom.
Rather than simply deploying new devices, the organisation wanted to ensure technology supported educational outcomes, improved classroom experiences and helped teachers deliver engaging learning opportunities.
The Opportunity
SCEA saw an opportunity to create a safer, more consistent and purposeful approach to classroom technology.
A varied device environment made it difficult to provide a consistent learning experience. Access to games, social media and messaging could also shift technology away from its educational purpose and create distractions during lessons.
Rather than focusing on devices alone, SCEA wanted to take a research-backed approach that would reclaim technology for learning. The priority was to put pedagogy first and create an environment where technology supported classroom focus, student engagement and educational outcomes.
The Approach
Working with Winthrop, SCEA introduced a managed Apple device programme designed around education-first outcomes.
A consistent device platform, supported by Apple Classroom, gave educators greater visibility into how technology was being used during lessons. Managed settings also helped reduce digital distractions and keep devices focused on educational use.
The approach extended beyond the technology itself. Winthrop supported implementation, educator capability and communication with families, helping the wider school community understand the educational purpose behind the programme.
The Outcome
By starting with pedagogy and supporting it with managed technology, SCEA has established a more consistent and purposeful digital learning environment.
Technology Focused on Education
Managed devices help reduce access to games, social media and other distractions during the school day. This supports a more focused classroom environment and reinforces the role of technology as a tool for education.
A consistent platform also gives students access to the same core learning environment, reducing the differences created by a varied range of devices.
Greater Visibility for Educators
Apple Classroom gives educators greater visibility and control over device use during lessons. Teachers can guide how technology is used, helping students remain focused on learning activities.
With greater classroom oversight, educators can use technology more purposefully to support creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and active participation.
A Consistent Platform for Learning
Moving to a common managed platform has simplified the technology experience for educators, students and ICT teams. Schools can support devices within a known environment, while teachers can plan learning activities with greater confidence and consistency.
Clear communication about how devices are configured and used has also helped families understand the education-first thinking behind the programme.
Why It Worked
The programme began with educational priorities rather than a technology decision. SCEA first considered how students learn, how educators teach and how technology could support both more effectively.
A research-backed strategy, consistent device ecosystem and classroom management tools provided a practical foundation for purposeful technology use. Support for educators and clear communication with families also helped position the programme as a teaching and learning initiative, rather than simply a device rollout.
By putting pedagogy first, SCEA has reclaimed technology as a purposeful part of the learning environment.
